Heavy Plant

I only got one suggestion for an addition to my hundred things list. Damian thought I should get an allotment. I like the idea, but it’s a bit too long term for now. So I’m going to modify it. Thing 103 will be Go Guerilla Planting in and around Manchester. Next Spring I’m going to potter around Manchester’s car parks and other spaces with a stick and some seeds. The stick makes the hole, I drop the seed in, and then I use the stick again to cover the hole up. I’m reckoning peas, herbs and other food plants. Though if I can find somewhere that sells marijuana seeds…….

Lonesome Cow Boy

With only some forms to fill out (and some tuition to pay), the first year of my HNC is now over. The fact that I’ve been given Summer projects suggests that they want me back, which is nice. I’m going to have to slot them in between my own Summer projects, though. Project 1 is Get a Job, but, failing that, I’m going to aim for setting myself a goal per week and seeing how many I can achieve. An ongoing goal is to get a week’s worth of Deputised Experts and Mary Tales done each week, so that when webcomicsnation finally goes online I’ll have a big healthy buffer of ready material. Other projects include learning enough Flash to do an interactive cow map, cycling- and documenting- the length of the Ship Canal, getting pictures for the Look Up, Look Down, series of walk guides around the city centre and aiming for a hundred miles a week on my bike ready for next year’s Bogle.

One cow I found yesterday-

And the view from the window about twenty minutes ago-

Three little letters

If you were a gamer with money to burn in the late 90’s then the letters SLI will bring a fond tear to your eye. 3DFX decided that their Voodoo 2 graphics card wasn’t powerful enough (it was the fastest thing on the market at the time) and decided to find a way to strap two of them together and double the power. They called this SLI, Scan Line Interleave. Each card rendered alternate scan lines then glued it all back together for display. It was stupidly powerful and very expensive. Needless to say graphics geeks (sorry, enthusiasts) loved it. Unfortunately 3DFX became obsessed with brand and marketing, forgot about engineering, crumbled and their patents and some of ther engineers were finally swallowed by rival nVidia.

It seems that some of the engineering heart that beat within 3DFX survived the collapse and IP buy up and has sprung to life within nVidia as the three beautiful letters, SLI, are back. This time one card handles the top half of the screen and the other the bottom and SLI stands for Scalable Link Interface but the result is the same. Twice the power for twice the money. I really wish I wasn’t already considering upgrading my system. I should probably apologise to my savings account in advance. More factoids can be found here, here and here.

Coffee Geek

I thought I’d try roasting slightly better quality beans, so I picked up some green Santos beans from Whittards on my wander on Friday. They’re not stronger beans, but are more mellow than the cheaper Venus beans. I’m going to mix the two batches 1/3 Santos to 2/3 no-name Venus beans for future brews.

By synchronicity, BoingBoing has a post dedicated to home roasting today, including a pointer to the eponymous CoffeeGeek.com.

Moral Turpitude

Turpitude, what a great word. A judge in Oklahoma is facing suspension after allegedly using a penis pump on himself during trials. He says he received the pump as a joke gift and is being framed.

“On one occasion, Ms. (Lisa) Foster (Thompson’s court reporter for 15 years), saw Judge Thompson holding his penis up and shaving underneath it with a disposable razor while on the bench,” the petition reads.

Tur”pi*tude, n. [L. turpitudo, from turpis foul, base.] Inherent baseness or vileness of principle, words, or actions; shameful wickedness; depravity. –Shak.

Grazing

via GeekPress, the ten most untranslateable words to and from English. It’s appropriate that Gobbledegook is one of the hardest English words to translate.

Is there a word, I wonder, for turning up to a meeting despite knowing from experience that the other party isn’t going to appear, but you have to go because you never know, this time they may turn up. Or, (slightly) less complicated, someone who is so consistently unreliable that they’re unreliability has become something you can rely on. It’s all turning into my own version of Waiting for Godot only without the beatings and suicide attempts.

Anyway, that’s what I spent yesterday afternoon doing. At least it was sunny and I got a few cow shots.

And a few non-cow pictures-

I also found a couple of books to add to my wants list- High Tide: news from a warming world and the Dictionary of Imaginary Places.

Sweet Action

When I launch Mary Tales I want it to appeal to female readers as much as male. This is not a New Man fluffy ideal so much as a desire to get subscription cash from the other half of the population as well. Maybe I should take some hints from the new wave of female targetting porn mags such as Sweet Action.

The Mary Tales gallery is currently full of naked or nearly naked ladies. I should rectify that.

"It's the ultimate in site stickiness"

Ask and ye shall receive. Another function can be crossed off the perfect sex toy list. Wired reports on remote control “scriptable” sex gadgets. Initially the devices are going to be marketed in conjunction with porn sites, with stars selling their own scripts for download. But it won’t be long after the device is launched that someone’s hacked the software and people can start offering their own scripts to swap.

The absolute perfect sex toy is still another person. Especially one wearing a Spinneyhead Perfect Sex Toy top or T shirt.
