Nutkin alert!

Nutkin alert!, originally uploaded by spinneyhead.

There aren’t many parts of the country left where red squirrels still live. My parents’ house is in one of those areas, so there are lots of signs like this.

I remember when this were all trees

But that’s the thing about Forestry woodland, sooner or later it gets chopped down and they start all over again.

The Real Great Depression

Historian Scott Reynolds Nelson feels that the current economic crisis is not modelled after the crash of 1929 but rather the Long Depression that began in 1873. More material to mull over for Sounds of Soldiers. The comments about increased protectionism could be a basis for the closed borders I’ve been hinting at in the snippets written so far.

Bridget Jones ruined my life

Watching romantic comedies gives the viewer unrealistic expectations of relationships and can even lead to communication problems. That’s the conclusion of a study carried out at Herriot Watt university, anyway. Girls, put down the chick flick and learn to love car chases and explosions. It’ll help you understand us better.

The university’s Dr Bjarne Holmes said: “Marriage counsellors often see couples who believe that sex should always be perfect, and if someone is meant to be with you then they will know what you want without you needing to communicate it.

“We now have some emerging evidence that suggests popular media play a role in perpetuating these ideas in people’s minds.

“The problem is that while most of us know that the idea of a perfect relationship is unrealistic, some of us are still more influenced by media portrayals than we realise.”

(Of course, I keep meaning to work on a romantic comedy script. Mine will be different, I promise.)

Run your car on coffee

Coffee beans have a high (11-20%) oil content, which can be extracted from the coffee grounds to create biodiesel. Global java production is nowhere near high enough to power everyone, but it could create up to 340 million gallons a year, according to a study- from stuff that has previously been considered waste or compost. People are going to carry on finding clever ways to use stuff rather than sending it to the dump, and that can only be a good thing.
