The Fenian Arch

Okay, this isn’t a picture of the arch, but the arch isn’t there any more anyway. It’s been replaced by a fairly boring concrete railway bridge.

As the plaque says, this was the site of an event of some infamy, when some Americans fighting for Irish independence, who had got themselves arrested, were freed by a mob.

A policeman was shot and killed during the breakout. I believe there’s a memorial to him in the church on St Anns Square. I may go and see if I can get a photo of that.
