Critical Mass, August 2016
I got a clip on wide angle lens for the phone, which will be good for photos and timelapse, but upsets the autofocus when there’s too much movement. I’ll know better next time.

Rather shaky. It’s not easy cycling whilst filming with your phone.
Glorious weather, so a decent turnout. This was the queue as we waited for a tram to pass.
I’ve had the Mini for a while now, but it’s spent most of the time sitting in the living room whilst I waited for bits. I’m going for white trim, though that may only last until the end of Critical Mass. I got the Raleigh original white tyres from Ebay, along with the much longer seat post. The saddle came from what’s left of the HandI bikes stockpile and the larger, colour matching, pedals were picked up at a Pop Up Bikes jumble.
12″ tyres are a pain to remove and replace, so the tubes are full of sealant and optimism. I repacked both wheels while I was about it.
Future possibilities include a white chain and decoration with stickers and practice pinstriping. For now, riding around town in the rain and then off to the pub.
This is one of the biggest turn outs in a while. Sadly, part of the reason for the turn out, and the red, is that it’s a memorial to a cyclist killed by a car last month.
This has been the wettest day in a while, so Critical Mass was always going
to be less well attended than normal.
Before the off. The first one I’ve made it to in ages. Turn out’s lower than normal because all the students have gone home.
Cyclists! As usual, I had forgotten it was Critical Mass day. Luckily I was reminded before I headed home.
Another good turnout.
Quite a good turn out. I expect there’ll be even more before we set off.
Ready for the off.
There’s a set of photos here.
Dammit! I forgot about Critical Mass again this month! And only 11 people turned up. My presence would have been so appreciated.

Still We Ride, a documentary about the mass arrests of cyclists at last August’s New York Critical Mass (the one that coincided with the Republican convention). The film’s premiere will be at the very cool sounding Bicycle Film Festival.

Critical Mass happens on the last Friday of the month in cities all over the world. I used to go on them, and when I remember which Friday is the last of the month I’ll do it again.
Of course, if you turn up to the regular New York Mass on the Friday before the Republican convention, the usually easy going NYPD will arrest the lot of you and throw you in “Little Gitmo”.
I went on a Critical Mass yesterday, for the first time in years, and people from the local branch of Indymedia were filming it. I look forward to seeing myself in jerky video action.
I did say I was going to photograph them for spinneyhead, but I don’t think I did in the end.
One of Manchester’s busiest city centre streets is going to be closed to cars on Sunday. I remember back in my Critical Mass days when we were supposed to be holding up the traffic, by the time we reached Deansgate the traffic would be holding us up.
