EMusic

‘)
Affilliate link

I’ve repeatedly said that I would sign up to a site that allowed me to download DRM free MP3s from a decent sized library. EMusic is close to being that service. It has over 3 million songs in its database and is quite easy to navigate. It doesn’t have every song you could ever want, because I guess a few record companies haven’t signed up yet- I couldn’t find the Camper Van Beethoven, Breeders or They Might Be Giants albums I was looking for- but there are a lot of smaller bands and oddities to be harvested. I spent a lot of my 50 free tracks getting country and western covers of songs like Ace of Spades and grabbing albums by Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend.

If they could get the back catalogues of the major labels I’d pay for unlimited downloads just so I could fill in the gaps in my record collection. This should be the future of music sales.

A rambling post about…… stuff

I’ve been doing some thinking about a change of direction for Spinneyhead. Some connections fired whilst I pondered this last week and I headed off to the new home of Monitor Duty, a comics blog I posted on for a while a few years ago.

It came as little surprise that I’d been retconned(*) out of MD history, given that I called out the site’s owner on his prejudices and left when it became obvious he was using circular logic to support them. (All Muslims are evil terrorists. Any Muslim shown to not be an evil terrorist doesn’t count because they’re obviously not a True Muslim. Because all Muslims are evil terrorists.) It’s not as big a deal as Violet Blue being unpersonned by BoingBoing and I have no problems not being associated with the site except on the Wayback Machine. [For transparency I ought to admit that I have removed posts about a particular person from Spinneyhead’s archives. If you’ve known me long enough you’ll know who and why. If you haven’t, sorry, I’m not going to elaborate.]

Anyway, scanning the front page I came across a post about the assumed politics of writers. This isn’t so much a response as thoughts arising, but I’d always assume that a good writer is more likely to be “liberal” than conservative. Good fiction is about change, and conservatives aren’t about change- it’s right there in their name. Partly because of this, and a need to make political points, conservative writers lack depth in characterisation- most often trying to compensate with a detailed biography- and an inability to flesh out the antagonists. I’m thinking, chiefly, of Tom Clancy and his technothriller brethren. In particular I remember one of Clancy’s books where a character whos only action was to cut down a tree got a page and a half of biography, almost as much as the chief villain.

Authors of all political shades are capable of coming out with polemics, of course. I just think that those of us to the left of centre, and the occasional libertarian, do it so much better.

This is a response to the last bit of the post-

“We” are not winning in Iraq. There is no winning in Iraq, there is merely sacrificing fewer people to a criminally stupid decision and trying to leave the country less fucked than it is at present. We are sacrificing fewer people, thankfully, but hundreds of thousands have died because of an illegal invasion and an incompetent occupation. You can’t win with that many corpses.

I’d love to see an attempt to justify the “Obama’s more ignorant than George W. Bush ever was”, which will probably be based upon some ignorant, unchecked opinion piece from a professional liar like Ann Coulter.

The Antarctic Alaskan National Wildlife Reserve holds about enough oil for a month of use by the US. Why spoil something for so little. Get a smaller car, turn down the air conditioning, fit solar panels and learn to walk!

Yes, McCain is a lousy candidate. All the Republicans were. Don’t be an idiot. Don’t vote for him.

Time to ditch Virgin?

I’ve read a couple of horro stories about Virgin Media today. BoingBoing focuses on the new CEO’s bollocks attitude to net neutrality. Charlie Stross thinks he’s identified a problem when a router is attached to a Virgin line.

I’ve noticed, since we got a new cable modem, that our connection seems slower and less reliable than before, even though we’re on a supposedly higher speed connection. The idea that they’ll penalise Spinneyhead for not paying them a bribe pisses me off as well. Traffic’s not that high at the moment, but it’s not going to grow if a load of potential customers find load times stretching because they’re with Virgin Media and the guys with money are getting preferential treatment.

It could be time to have a word with the man who pays our internet bills.

Toshiba test – day 1

Tosh, originally uploaded by spinneyhead.

I have been given a Toshiba laptop to review by the people at talktoshiba. Which is nice, except that we can’t get it to talk to the wireless.

The computer is a Tecra A8. I don’t have access to the technical specs right now, I may dig them out later. Today’s mission, between trying to fix a puncture 15 times (which is another story altogether), was to test connectivity. First, I wanted to transfer yWriter and WeFi from my PC. This was easy enough once I sorted out bluetooth ids.

Next I needed to send a yWriter project from my normal (borrowed) laptop, an old but reliable Toshiba Portege. I plugged an IR dongle into the back of the Tecra and it recognised it but didn’t want to use it for anything. I lined the two laptops up, but the Portege couldn’t detect the dongle. This looks like something I will have to try again.

Most annoying of all, I can’t get the Tecra to connect to the internet in the house. I’ve tried it around town with WeFi, where it can detect lots of wireless nodes. It could connect to the pay wireless in Cafe Nero, which wasn’t much use. On Albert Square there were dozens of nodes detectable, but none- not even StreetNet which I’ve used before- could be connected to. I didn’t have the Portege with me to do a side by side test, but I can say that it has been used to surf from the Albert memorial.

Damian has pointed out that I can just plug it into the house network with a cable, which is what I will do later, but it does kind of defeat the object of a laptop.

Tomorrow I’ll get the rest of the software onto the laptop and start using it properly.

Fiction: One year on

They weren’t waiting for him on the first day. That was enough for him to know there would be a problem. During the next year he would send a message back. The world he had left would depart from the one he had arrived in. No-one knew what would happen to him and his divergent universe after had sent the message.

He spent a week researching the events of the last year, checking whether the divergence point had already passed. Too much seemed the same. As he suspected, the moment was yet to arrive. As soon as he knew this, he raided a safety deposit box set aside for just such an eventuality and indulged in a week long debauch.

It was impossible to send anyone or anything back in time. The energy requirements were too much and the anomalies created would collapse the launching universe. However, it was simple to send someone forward, so that’s what they did.

One year was deemed the optimum distance, far enough to give ample warning but not so far that future shock was a risk. If the volunteer sent nothing back in their year in another country they would be met on the day they arrived. As yet, the paradox had never been tested or questioned.

He rented an apartment, bought a computer and got an internet connection and subscriptions to all the main news sources. He resisted the desire to sink into substance abuse, but he had more than enough money to pay for the finest food and, occasionally, the best prostitutes.

Then he just settled in and waited, for whatever calamity was to come.

Ian interviewed on Let's Go Global tv

Yesterday evening I went along to the Let’s Go Global tv studios in Old Trafford to see how they made their programmes because I might be co-presenting the No Budget Show from next week. The singer scheduled to do two songs didn’t turn up, so they interviewed me about Memory instead. I can’t get it to work on my PC, but the Superchannel stream of the show is here. If you can make it work, please tell me how good or bad I was.

Get Democracy

I’m trying out the Democracy player, a video player/internet TV thingy with lots of features. They’re currently on the final beta version before a full launch under another name.

I like being able to view stuff from disparate sources in one place. There are a few minor niggles, but they’re mostly problems with familiarisation. The big issue I’m having is that it won’t play videos from Revver very well. My Democracy Player channel (see the sidebar) is having issues and other Revver videos have flickering on them. This may not all be Democracy’s fault, because I’ve had reports of various Revver videos not having sound on them on some people’s computers but not others. I’m going to contact Revver about that and keep on using Democracy in the mean time.

Update One other slight problem. The mini-wizard that’s supposed to appear on first start up is still running every time I turn the PC on. If it could just remember that I’ve already used it I’d be happier.

Five Minds for the future

Five Minds for the Future sounds like a fascinating book. Author Howard Gardner believes that we will need five distinct ways of thinking to cope with the ever more complex world.

He identifies this priceless pentad as: the disciplined mind, schooled in basic subjects such as history, science and art but, crucially, a master of one profession, vocation or craft; the synthesising mind, which can make sense of disparate pieces of information (Gardner identifies this as a key trait of good managers and highlights its importance in the age of the internet); the creating mind, capable of asking new questions and finding imaginative answers; the respectful mind, which shows an appreciation of different cultures; and the ethical mind, which enables one to behave responsibly as a worker and citizen.

There is an interesting bit toward the end of the article where he suggests that freedom of speech should be curtailed a bit to cope with the needs of the Respectful mind. He cites the Mohammed cartoons furore as an example. They should not have been published out of respect for the religion of Islam and its restrictions on the depiction of the Prophet. Which is fair as far as it goes, but he misses the logical counterpoint- those demonstrating against the cartoons should have had some respect for the Western ideal of free speech and not gone around threatening death and mayhem over the whole affair.
