Went to see war of the worlds last night and it was far better than i expected. I should have had more faith, really, because this was spielberg after all. The Terminal was a bit poor, but most of his other output has been solid. He even got the scientology dwarf to do stuff that looked a lot like real acting.

A recent post on world changing pointed out that the original novel was an attack on imperialism. No matter how watered down the message gets that makes this, rather than RoTS the big anti iraq war/bush movie of the year. The message is still there if you look- one character opines that occupations never work and cruise’s character tries at first to keep his son from joining the resistance and finally, when all hope seems lost, makes the desperate decision to become a suicide bomber. (he lives, of course, because he’s the hero)

there are failings, such as the feel good resurrection at the end, but overall very good.

Only one thought on what’s happened in london- when tony tells up it could have been prevented by identity cards it’ll just be final proof that he’s lying manipulative scum.

Update Title lifted from Donation, by The Wonderstuff, off the Never Loved Elvis album.

I just heard that london won the olympic bid. Which is nice. I don’t have much else to say, because it’s not like the commonwealth games, where i was actually in the city and feeling the atmosphere. I’ve served my time in london and it’s unlikely i’ll ever want, or be able to afford, to live there again.

The coffee shop has landed……

I’ve uploaded some more phone cam pictures from Saturday to flickr. This rather sci-fi looking pod is a new cafe in the Corn Exchange (I waver between calling it by its original name and Triangle, which is what it wants to be called nowadays, depending upon my mood). I see a scene from Deputised Experts or one of my other planned comics unfolding here.

Shopping for birthday presents is tough work, particularly when you tie it to my hatred of the city centre on a saturday. I don’t know what this sculpture’s meant to be (can you see a theme with me and sculpture?)

going to watch a little bit of live 8 and then go on to do more shopping.

(triumph of the geeks moment- bill gates just got cheered on stage!)

I’m not sure what it’s called and have even less of a clue what it represents. But it’s quite a civilised thing to look at over a tuna mayo sandwich.

There’s something about drawing tables in illustrator that brings out the anal perfectionist in me. It used to be the same with reports in access, endless fascinated hours nudging lines about by fractions of a millimetre. I’m trying to distance myself from work involving databases now, if only because i seem to work for a lower class of boss when i get them. Besides, anal attention to how something looks is more appropriate to a graphics related job.

Spinneyhead gallery for June, with Garden of Delights pictures

According to the organisers– “The Garden of Delights is a ‘weekend-long pleasure garden for the 21st century!’ that takes place every summer at the start of June. It attracts thousands of families, students and young singles to Platt Fields Park in South Manchester for a highly enjoyable mix of visual installations, entertainment and natural surroundings. The overall atmosphere generated is one of inclusiveness, multi-culturalism, healthy eating/drinking, fresh air and non-stop delights. Our slogan for the event is “all ages, all cultures, all weekend”.”

I went to last year’s, and you can see the pictures in the June 2004 gallery, along with a load of shots from the Cow Parade. If all goes to plan there will be a Garden of Delights every year until 2010, which will mark the centenary of Platt Fields Park. I’m seriously thinking about putting something together for next year’s show.

Garden of Delights

It might have been the weather, but this year’s event seemed to be lacking some of the wonder of last year’s. Only a little, though.

This is the sort of thing I want to cover in Spinneyworld, there’ll be more photos in the Spinneyworld Flickr group and possibly a longer post about Garden of Delights tomorrow.

Manchester Whit Walks

The Whit Walks started in 1800 when the Sunday Schools gathered once a year to parade around town. Over time, the parades became associated with Whit Sunday, the seventh Sunday after Easter. They continued into the 1950s and have recently been resurrected. More information on this page.

I happened upon this year’s Whit Walk entirely by accident when I cycled into town yesterday. I didn’t even catch it all, but it took a good half hour to pass my position. I’ve uploaded pictures to Flickr and you can see all the photos tagged “whit walk” here.

Wierd shit you run into on a Bank Holiday

I went into town to buy gardening gear, only to run into a long procession marching down Upper Brook Street. It turned out to be a modern version of the Whit walks, where the churches from all the parishes around Manchester come out and stroll about to make their presence felt.

I only had my phone cam to take pictures with. I’ve uploaded them to Flickr because I’m experimenting with using that for Spinneyworld pictures. Check out the Spinneyworld group here.

(I think the phone’s camera is beginning to die. I’m sure the colour saturation is off and if you look at the periphery of each picture you’ll see it’s fuzzy.)
