RIP
RIP Gerry Anderson
Gerry Anderson, the creator of hit TV shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Joe 90, has died at the age of 83.
RIP Dr Alex Moulton RIP
Dr Moulton designed the suspension on the original Mini as well as the Moulton bicycle, which I still lust after.
Dr Alex Moulton RIP, 1920-2012 | Bicycle Business | BikeBiz.
RIP Larry Hagman
The actor has died aged 81. He had appeared in lots of other stuff, but he’ll be remembered as JR Ewing.
RIP Michael Clarke Duncan
The actor has died at 54, after a heart attack.
I’ve not seen Green Mile yet, but lately we’ve been enjoying his turn in The Finder.
RIP Tony Scott
The film director has died aged 68, committing suicide in LA.
Tony Scott didn’t produce the grand visions that Ridley does, but I bet his films were more successful than his brother’s. They may just have been throw away action movies, but he still created some of the most memorable ones out there. I’d even watch The Last Boy Scout again if it was on tonight (but not Man On Fire).
RIP Amy Winehouse
There’s some macabre mythology about the number of musicians who have died at the age of 27, and this is just going to add to it.
RIP Peter Yates
The director has died aged 82.
I admit, I didn’t know who he was until I read the Jalopnik post. He directed Bullit, which gave us one of the best known car chases on film.
RIP Gerry Rafferty
I didn’t know he was a member of Stealers Wheel, so I’m going to forgo the obligatory Baker Street embed in favour of this-
City to City, the album with Baker Street on it, used to be a favourite of mine, but I haven’t owned a copy in years.
RIP Captain Beefheart
The musician has died aged 69. I only own Trout Mask Replica. It’s a very odd album, and I have been told it’s absolutely the wrong one to have bought as an introduction to the works of Don Van Vliet.
RIP Leslie Neilsen
The actor has died at 84. The web will be awash with Naked Gun and Airplane clips, so I thought I’d go with Forbidden Planet instead.
RIP Dino De Laurentiis
The film producer has died aged 91.
His IMDB page. He gave us Barbarella and Flash Gordon, amongst many others. That’s a pretty good legacy.
RIP Benoit Mandelbrot
The mathematician has died aged 85. Somewhere I have a photo of a Mandelbrot set rendered by my BBC B computer. I may have copied the program which did it, but I was proud of it. Somewhere I may still have a copy of Chaos, which introduced me to Mandelbrot’s theories.
