Bucky

Desparate to spit the dummy whenever someone disagrees with them, American rightwingers will go as far as to label Captain America Un-American. You’ll notice that, whilst they’re busy complaining, they’re not above putting a link to the offending stories on Amazon in the hope they might make some money off them. (My link to the same book, give me the commission, I deserve it more than they do.)

If you’re going to have a character who so obviously represents a country, then some creators are going to use their stories to express opinions on that country. Cap’s been there before. I’m not a big Cap’n Yank fan, so I did some research.

In the early 70’s Watergate made it onto the pages of the comic as Cap found the president was working for the Secret Empire. Following the suicide of Nixon El Pres and his replacement with an actor, Steve Rogers (CA) stopped wearing the flag and wandered around the world as Nomad fighting evil corporations. Of course, he came back after a while, when one of the people acting as Cap was killed. He quit again in the 80s when ordered to work directly for the Government.

Anti-climax. Please

I’m waiting for the punchline. As the Americans joyride around Baghdad and root out dangerous agricultural products, I can’t lose the sickening feeling that there’s going to be some horrific twist. (I don’t doubt that there are some NBC weapons somewhere. Not in the quantities that we’ve been promised and unlikely to be used, but out there, somewhere.)

But I think I’ll be waiting and worrying for a long time, because the backlash won’t be a big, messy Fedayeen last stand. It’s more likely to come after Liberation, in sniper and bomb attacks and kidnappings, just like in Afghanistan.

Documentation

God I hate documentation. I have to document the many and varied databases I have made whilst I’ve been here before I leave. The documenter in Access is meant to solve all your problems, but just creates page after page of pointless cack. In ’97 you could save the documenter results to a table, base a report on it and then export to Word. A little faffing around with the paragraph formatting and there y’go. It looks quite neat and professional (well, more professional than you’d expect from the likes of me anyway). Is this cool and useful tool in 2000? Noooooo, they’ve just decided to be clever and give you the shitty, poorly formatted report.

I’m boring you aren’t I? Terribly sorry. I’ll start talking about the war again……..
