Fiction- Ron

Notes I’m working my way through the archives looking for stuff to collate into a book of short, and very short, fiction. It’s inspired in part by some of Warren Ellis’s musings on the papernet. I’ve been sticking little chunks of fiction on here for a while. Some have been set ups for longer stories that never happened, others were self contained. This piece followed Tribes and All Stood Still but, as far as I can tell, has never appeared on the blog before. It’s an experiment in layout and dialogue which may be a bit of a mess. I fully expect to go back in and tweak the html.

A brief review of Nokia Sports Tracker

It doesn’t work on my phone.

Perhaps that was a little too brief.

Nokia Sports Tracker is a neat sounding mobile phone app I heard about on Tuesday. Basically it will use the built in GPS on your Nokia phone to track training rides or other journeys, geotagging any photos taken along the way and allowing you to upload the data to a website to share. I love mapping software so I thought I’d give it a go.

The problem is, my 6220 has never been all that good at GPS. The built in software has found a signal once and still thinks I’m in the same back garden I was eight months ago. Google mobile maps works far better. I guess it polls phone masts and does a bit of initial triangulating from that. Right now it’s got me to within 700 metres- not great for navigating, but it does get better when it can find GPS signals. However, Google maps doesn’t have, that I can find, the trip recording features that are what appealed to me about Sports Tracker.

Does anyone know of an alternative?

The Ampera, Vauxhall’s electric car

Vauxhall have unveiled their planned electric car, the Ampera. It’s actually a hybrid of sorts. The wheels are driven by electric motors and an overnight charge will be enough for a journey of around 40 miles, after which a petrol powered generator takes over.

It’s certainly better looking than a Prius, in concept car mode anyway. What they really need to do is give it a felx fuel engine, or one of the multi fuel motors Lotus have been working on.

Or even don’t not photograph infrastructure, as the guy in this video was arrested twice despite not taking the pictures the Police accused him of. I was stopped at the Labour conference last year because I was walking around the G-Mex taking pictures of the security perimeter. I don’t know what it is about me that kept me safe from further harassment, mybe my jovial nature.
