The South shall ride again!

Or something like that.

I’ll be damned if I’m going to let the pathetic vandalism of some little scally shits stop me cycling.  However, I think a change of tactics is in order.  The bike is a write off, if I replace the broken parts then I will have spent more on the bike than it originally cost.  So today I stripped it down and kept all the parts that may be useful in the future.  RideManchester recycles and rebuilds bikes, they can have the frame (minus the new V brakes I bought last month) and all the other useful bits are going into a bucket to be reused.  And then I’m going to get a new bike.

My new bike is going to be an old bike.  The bike shop just down the road has a selection of second hand, pre-abused cycles displayed in front of it.  I’m lucky in that I can currently get a tax break on my travelling expenses, which translates to a mileage allowance for cycling of £2 a day.  If I pick up a £40 or £50 bike I reckon it’ll pay for itself within a month.  So then, if the scallies do hit my ride as regularly as they have since we moved in at least it will have paid for itself in the mean time.  (Plus they don’t seem to have touched the crappy old bikes that are chained up on the same street, it may just have been the shiney silvery-ness of my bike that attracted them magpie like.)  I’ll stick with crappy bikes until we move somewhere where I can store them indoors.

It’s either this or finding a way to wire my bike up to the mains for the next time they try anything, and that’s just not eco-friendly.

First Casting

I’m working toward making and selling a range of bases cast in plaster of paris. I made my first mould over the weekend, though I got it wrong and the latex took three days to cure. The first plaster base was extracted yesterday. There are some imperfections in the surface, including bubbles and a slight indentation, that mean the mould isn’t ready yet to produce commercial copies. However it is going to be used to cast a wax blank on which I’ll build the first decorated base- either a street scene with pavement for smaller Cararama vehicles and such like or a generic planking floor that could suit various scales.

More reports as the project progresses.

Explain this to the taxman

Ray Digerati- will fix computers for sex.

Do you have a set, um, pay scale?
No, I leave it up to their discretion. One girl didn’t want to have intercourse, so she offered me a massage and then finished me off with a hand job. It’s basically all about the time I spend: If I’m working for one or two hours, I’d like a blow job. An orgasm for every two hours of service is pretty fair. If it’s something simple that I can fix in 15 minutes, I’d like to get a foot massage.

iBuzz

I’m sure someone’s already done this, but it’s hip because it’s jumping on the iPod bandwagon. Or something.

The iBuzz plugs into your iPod (or any other music player) and vibrates in time with the music. It also comes with his ‘n hers attachments.

Turn him into a vibrator with the stretchy ring and use the soft sleeve for sensitive stimulation.

Dark as my soul

You could be anyone by day, when the only thing that could give you away is the occasional band shirt and all the EBM in your cd collection. You probably have a day job, have alot of other interests besides goth, or are just too lazy to dress up for anything besides a club night. I bet you love 80’s music.

What kind of goth are you?

thanks to Tim

(Clare wants to know how on earth I got to be any type of goth at all.)

Time for some PC advice

I need a new computer. Luckily enough I can actually afford to buy one. It’s just that the options are so varied. I know what I want to do and I think I’ve got an idea of what I need, but I’ll list the criteria here and see if anyone has any better ideas.

Mostly I want to do graphics- the comics and photo stuff, video editing and 3d. Poser isn’t a Maya level 3d engine, but it does use raytracing in the new version’s renders. It’s getting a bit much waiting 4 hours for a preview render only to discover I’ve got the hair colour wrong. I’m not that fussed about gaming at the moment, and I’m more likely to play real time strategy than first person shooters, but it would be nice to shoot things every so often.

So I reckon processor power, RAM and hard disk space are very important factors. An external drive for backups might also be a good investment. A nice, large flat screen monitor. I don’t need a bundled camera, scanner or printer (crap as the current printer is being at the moment), because I’ll pick my own when I want to get them. And on-site warranty would be nice.

Not a lot to ask for, really. Any suggestions anyone? I have to sort it out by Christmas as well, because that’s when I’ve promised my parents they can have my current one.

death and mutilation to scallies

death and mutilation to scallies
death and mutilation to scallies,
originally uploaded by spinneyhead.

This time i’m really angry. When i had the wheel and seat stolen it was understandable. A rather pathetic piece of crime, but understandable.

Last night the little shits came back and, discovering they couldn’t have another free wheel, decided to vandalise my bike. They cut the cables, the chain and the spokes of the back wheel.

I am seriously pissed off.

Old tech, new tables

Two rather gorgeous examples of recycling the most unexpected stuff as furniture.

The hard drive coffee table.

The Hard Drive Coffee Table top is an original 26″ diameter hard drive platter from an early storage device (circa 1970). The center hub of the platter is solid aluminum. The custom-created pedestal is also solid aluminum; a cylinder measuring 5.9″ in diameter and 18.5″ in length. It has a machined top and bottom to fit into the hard drive hub and base, respectively. The base is a solid aluminum 12″ diameter, 1.75″ high round obtained from a now-defunct government laboratory. Four bolts are screwed into tapped holes in the pedestal in order to secure the hard drive platter and the pedestal is press-fit into the base. It is covered with standard 1/4″ table glass. The completed design measures 19.5″ high and weighs 64 pounds.

The small bomb table.

The first time you ever heard the phrase “smart bomb”, you might have wondered what a “dumb bomb” was, or if one even existed. Well, they do, and the Mk-81 is an example of an old-fashioned dumb bomb. While they last saw action in the Vietnam War, they are sure to see plenty of action near your bar, in your game room, or even as a conversation piece in the living room of as the perfect end table for an aviation enthusiast. The Mk-81 Small Bomb table comes with a tempered glass top.

Biodiesel as recycling

Treehugger throws down the challenge, not specifically for the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation but for all, to do really joined up thinking when it comes to adopting biofuels and incorporate recycling rather than just growing stuff specifically to produce fuel. This is what I meant to say at the end of my post about RTFO but forgot to.

Climate Camp

With the government failing and unable to take action on the greatest issue facing our planet, climate chaos, we have to create a grass roots solution

A huge camp is being organised to bring people together to:

* provide information on climate change and its causes
* take action against climate change
* share and live practical solutions
* network with other people campaigning on all the aspects of climate change

The camp will be in the North of England next summer, and organisation is starting noe. If you are concerned about crazy weather and want to start taking action – join us!

Everyone is invited to get involved and come to a public meeting 11am – 6pm 14th January at Bridge 5 Mill, 22a Beswick St, Manchester.

Accommodation is available if you contact us in advance. Please also contact us about any access, dietary or creche needs.
