Apologies for the lack of activity on Spinneyhead

But I’ve been busy with various things, as the reposted tweets may have made obvious.

Okay, admittedly I lost most of Sunday to a hangover, but for the last two days I’ve spent a lot of my time editing together 60, the venn.tv short for the Not Part Of festival. The timing’s settled, but there’s still a bit of colour correction and the old split screens to put in.

I’ve also done a little bit of work on Shall We Take A Trip?, my erotic comic project. I’ve got one page left to draw, and front and back covers, then I’ll go through and re-letter it before packaging and selling it.

And I’m still working on Sounds of Soldiers, trying to get the first draft finished. I’m currently struggling with rewriting one of the chapters and there are a few that still need writing from scratch. When the first draft’s finished I have an idea for getting it edited and copy checked. I’ll tell you more nearer the time.

There’s going to be a rash of Spinneyhead product soon, but for now it’s all a bit quiet.

Recording the voice over for 60

Scarlett and Gabe are Voice 1 and Voice 2 for 60. We have recorded 4 takes and I’ll pick and mix the best versions to dub over the live action.

Venn Episode 2 is online

It’s the morning after the night before. Should Sarah and Gareth tell Paul about their one night stand? Was it just a one night stand? And who is the mystery woman at Paul’s door.

Featuring Edward Graham Lindup, Annamarie Bayley, Nathan Head and Mary Gerardine Hooton. Sound by Alan Ward of awardsounds.co.uk. Written, directed and edited by Ian Pattinson

The Bechdel Test

Charlie Stross has posted a piece about Alison Bechdel’s rules for movies (though she attributes the rules to Liz Wallace.)

1. Does it have at least two women in it,

2. Who [at some point] talk to each other,

3. About something besides a man.

Time to test some of my output against the rules. I don’t think Global Weirding passes, but then it’s a first person tale from a male character, which Stross allows a pass for. Ruby Red does pass, because of conversations between Elaine and Ruby. Deputised Experts, I think, has conversations about the investigation between female characters, so it should be okay as well. And George and Hannah talk about everything but men in Memory, though George was written primarily as a geek and could have just as easily been a man. Venn? Well, there’s only one female character in episode 1, and lots of the following episodes are specifically about sex and relationships, so…..

Venn- days 2 & 3 of shooting

Cliche Friends style pose, originally uploaded by spinneyhead.

We successfully shot the bedroom and party scenes for Venn episodes 1-3 over the weekend. Bedroom, with Graham and Annamarie, on Saturday, party on Sunday.

Firstly, big thanks to Dan, Jenny and Imogen for letting us invade their home two days in a row, mess up the Feng Shui of their living room and make them drink on a Sunday afternoon. A second mention for Dan and Jenny for being my microphone monkeys (every Spinneyhead production has at least one monkey). They could have great careers ahead of them holding poles. Damian, as so often before, was transport monkey.

Dave stepped in at the last minute to play Mark, host of the party and Sarah’s ex. Meg and Harry bravely snogged through eight or nine takes whilst Damian talked to the curtains. It’ll all make sense in the final edit.

Now I’m going to spend the afternoon getting footage off the camera and seeing if I can convert it to a format my computer’s happy with. (Otherwise I’ll have to edit using Damian’s Mac, which would be such a chore.)

More photos, including far too many of the cliched sofa shot, in the Venn gallery.

Maus Wein

Maus Wein, originally uploaded by spinneyhead.

A prop for the first few episodes of Venn. In the universe of Venn Ike, AKA The Mouse, is a huge media star and even has his own wine.
The label was designed by Meg from my brief (“It’s a cheap white and it’s got the Mouse on it.”) I printed it on sticky label and put it on a bottle of cheap white wine. There will be two bottles of this, one full one empty, for continuity purposes.

Help Venn.tv buy a better camera and equipment

Fundable is a site that allows groups of people to pledge money to help others. Payment is only taken if the minimum pledge amount is reached. I’ve started a Fundable fundraiser to buy a high definition camcorder for Venn so that the image quality can do the acting and script more justice. We also need better sound equipment. Money left over from buying the camera will go toward this.

Venn.tv is the home of the Venn sitcom. We’re ready to start shooting the first episodes and I’d really like to do the actors and script justice by using better equipment. £1000 ($2000) will purchase a high definition hard disk camcorder such as the JVC Everio HD7, a docking station that will burn backups of footage, spotlights and diffusers. Any more money raised above this will go toward sound equipment including recording devices, microphones and booms.

Episode 0 was shot using a cheap camcorder with a cheap shotgun microphone and basic lighting. We’ve got some good actors and a good script, but the video quality isn’t doing them justice.

Added Benefits for Contributors:

All donors will be listed on the Venn.tv pages for the first four episodes of the series, with links to their websites if supplied. The list will be in descending order by size of donation. Anyone donating over $250 will be mentioned as a sponsor in the end titles of the first four episodes, which will be distributed for viewing beyond the Venn.tv site through embedding on other sites. Anyone donating over $1000 will have a pre title ad on the first four episodes- “Brought to you by-“

Pretending to play

Pretending to play, originally uploaded by spinneyhead.

Annamarie and Nathan practicing their pretend racing game skills prior to filming. I’ll post a report from the set later. For now I have to clear stuff off my hard drive so I can transfer all the footage.
