Healthy pornography?

There is a lot of truly awful porn out there. But there is good stuff too, and there is the potential for the best of it to be positive. The authors of the piece below worked with experts to find some good producers and suggest ways to make the industry’s output better.

Are small breasts illegal in Australia now?

Australia’s government seems to be going through some sort of moral panic at the moment. This press release from the Australian Sex Party details new and dumb restrictions on the content of adult material. Depictions of female ejaculation are to be banned, presumably because someone- like Queen Victoria and lesbians- doesn’t believe it really happens. (TMI, but I’m confident I’ve seen it in real life. Not as spectacular as porn would have you believe, but definitely not urine and something more than mere lubrication.)

Another, even dumber, crackdown is on models with smaller breasts. The Sex Party asserts that material featuring models with A cups is being restricted because, somehow, it’ll excite paedophiles.

I just read 25, 000 Years of Erotic Freedom by Alan Moore, which is basically a long essay on the history of smut with ample illustrations and gorgeous packaging. One of his conclusions is that the state of the eortic arts in the English speaking world (actualy he just calls out Britain and the US, but I think we can add Australia now) is so awful precisely because of the efforts our governments make to restrict discussion of sex.

There’s too much low quality, demeaning and insulting (to both sexes) porn out there, and it’s not because there’s too much freedom. It’s because many of the people who would create interesting, challenging, life affirming, sex positive and gorgeous work are scared off by the threats of censorship and worse. By saying that one aspect of women’s sexual experience is too vile to be discussed and that a particular body type (a body type I prefer- I’m Not Safe For Australia) shouldn’t be seen, Australia’s government are doing great harm and little, if any, good.

Right. I’m off to draw a page of comic art which may be illegal in Australia.

Shall We Take A Trip? is now available

Shall We Take A Trip? Front Cover 6"x9"

This is the revised cover for Shall We Take A Trip?, now available in 6 by 9 inch format at a sensible price. You can buy a printed version or a downloadable one from the Mary Tales shop at Lulu.

Be warned, this new comic, and everything else in that shop is sexually explicit. I call it erotica, you may think of it as porn. It’s one of those judgement calls where two people can look at the same thing and have completely different reactions. I may redesign the cover again for distribution through Amazon and others, but for now I’m going to go and work on a comic more suited to all ages.

Kinky protesters at Westminster

Vivienne Westwood’s son, Ben, demonstrated against Government plans to criminalise “extreme pornography” by parading around Westminster with two models in bondage gear and chains. The legisltion does sound quite dumb and will probably be used primarily by Police pissed off that they’ve grought in the wrong man and can’t prove anything else against him.

Crooked Features

A few weeks ago I received the Crooked Features DVD AKA ‘The Making of “Attack ofthe Clowns”‘. It’s a low budget mockumentary about the making of a low budget movie. Whilst the humour was a bit too much from the Office school for me to like it had its moments.

Rod Shuffler is a seasoned porn director- the number of films he claims to have made goes up as the film progresses- who wants to make a mainstream film and/or win a best film award at the SHAFTAs rather than yet another LIfetime Achievement gong. However his efforts are stymied by his use of his usual cast and crew, though with a new leading lady, and the funder Mr. Barclays threats of dire consequences if there are no sex scenes.

The film follows an obvious trajectory through casting, location shoots and rewrites toward the final orgy scene that you know isn’t going to happen and a somewhat anti-climactic “let’s just shoot the film we always meant to” ending. It would have worked better for me if it had been less like an attempt to do The Office meets Boogie Nights, but that’s personal taste. Still it’s worthy try, on a fraction of the budget of I Want Candy.

The Erotic Adventures of Buffy and Evil Vampire Willow

Joss Whedon and others are doing a neat job bringing us season eight of Buffy as a comic from Dark Horse. There’s one collection out already- Long Way Home, collecting the first 5 issues and No Future For You, a Faith heavy tale, is due in June.

However, before this revamp Anne-Lise and Fox created their own reimagining. The Erotic Adventures of Buffy and Evil Vampire Willow makes smutty fun of storylines from the series as Buffy and alternate universe vampire Willow get it on, keep Angel and Faith chained up in the cupboard and turn Mr Pointy into a vibrator. Alyson Hannigan is an official crush of Spinneyhead, especially as Vampire Willow, so how could I resist this naughty version of her character. The most recent strip seems to be a few years old, but you can hope for new stuff.

L'Enfer

Time to brush up on your French and pop over to Paris. The Bibliotheque Nationale is opening its collection of porn and erotica to the public.

The “Enfer” section of the Bibliotheque Nationale – books and prints and photographs purchased, confiscated or donated over almost two centuries – is believed to be one of the largest and richest collections of pornographic and erotic materials in the world. The Vatican’s secret stash is said to be even larger but that, presumably, will never be opened to the public.

Actually the second go around at this image, and the strip that follows it. One lazy Sunday a couple discuss the difference between erotica and porn using just interpretive dance.

Or something similar.

Done in Poser, exported as line art and cel-shaded colour then composited, cleaned up and lettered.

So, what's Catalan for "Give it to me, big boy"?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/03/04/wcatal04.xml
The Catalan government gave a pornographic film maker grants totalling £10,000 to make and promote dirty films in the area’s language.  Conrad Son made The Sea is not Blue, about a couple’s sexual relationship near the Mediterranean; Laura is Lonely, about a bored woman’s sex-filled affair with a stranger; and The Memory of the Fish, about a married executive’s sexual adventures.  He insists they are not porn, but erotic art.  I’d have to watch them before I could judge that claim.

A trip into the Daily-Mailiverse

Just a few Daily Mail stories from the last few days.

Holy diversity! Look what’s happened to Batwoman

Holy sad comics news story cliche number one!

The new Batwoman is to be a “buxom socialite” lesbian and (Gasp! Choke!) comics in general are becoming a bit less white.

(Wikipedia’s Batwoman page)

Harry Potter heroine ‘encourages violence in girls’

I haven’t read the books, but I have seen the films and Hermione is portrayed as a geek most of the time. So why isn’t there a shocking rise in girls studying as a result? I think someone has a book to sell.

Professor James Garbarino, author of the book, See Jane Hit: Why Girls Are Growing More Violent and What We Can Do About it

There’s a surprise.

(Harry Potter stuff on Amazon)

Farmer who builds gallows accused of profiting from death

So it would be okay if he did it for charity? From that offended headline they managed to twist the story round to suggest the return of capital punishment mightn’t be so bad, especially for child murderers.

Brown’s billions are ‘sovietising’ the north

Wythenshawe just looks like a gulag, okay. I know, let’s privatise everything.

Downloads of Net porn hit record high

More than nine million men – almost 40 per cent of the adult male population – logged on to sex websites last year, more than four times as many as the estimated two million in 2000.

The number of women downloading Internet porn soared 30 per cent to 1.4million.

So more women are looking at porn but, somehow, it’s only the men who have “unrealistic” expectations because of what they see? Is Britain a country of hot studs with big dicks and perfect six packs?

And no, dear Daily Mail reporter, adult pornography does not lead to child porn addiction.

Why won’t internet bosses stamp out web porn?

Or, rather, “Why won’t they do what we tell them to do?”

Old graves may be used for double burials

The idea involves reopening untended graves more than 75 years old and transferring the remains to a smaller container, which would be buried deeper in the same plot.

Another coffin could then be lowered into the original space.

Why does Ken Loach loathe his country so much?

Because of people like you?

The Da Vinci Load

For those few of you who can still get Spinneyhead at work- do not click on the links in this post.

You have been warned.

Fleshbot on upcoming Hustler release The Da Vinci Load

Operatives of the Priory of Semen, including penile profiler Dr. Nadia Saint (Missy Monroe) discover that Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa using his own sperm. Determined to resurrect Da Vinci and overjoyed that the master’s sperm was not all “lost up a man’s ass”, they steal the painting and kill anyone who gets in their way.

This is already so much more believable than that whole Virgin Mary thing.

Having forced myself to read the book, I can’t think of anything better that could be done with it.

Want free porn? Get elected

Every month, free of charge, all 535 members of the US Congress get the latest edition of Hustler. Most of them, foolishly, file it in the bin. Some have even taken legal measure to stop their supply of free smut.

Larry Flynt started the mailings in 1974 (or 1983, depending on which source you believe) because he felt the Congresscritters ” should be informed with what’s going on in the rest of the world,”

If you’re in the Washington area, you might want to go through Congress’ trash-

Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, says it is offensive that his staffers have to see the publication when opening the mail.

“It’s immediately deposited in an outside trash bin, so no one else has to be offended by it,” Matheson says. “It’s insulting behavior on the part of the publisher, but not surprising.”

9 Songs

I’ve watched a small number of porn films. The ones that tried to have a story were the worst- those involved should have spent some money on acting lessons rather than silicone and gym memberships.

So 9 Songs isn’t really porn. It has actual actors and a story that isn’t ludicrous.

There are other reasons the film isn’t porn. Sex isn’t the only thing that’s going on. The scenes aren’t sharply lit and the actors don’t contort so the camera can see all the details.

All in all it’s the sort of thing I’ve felt should have been made for a long time. It’s a love story that isn’t coy about what goes on in the bedroom. There could be a market for this sort of thing, but I don’t see much of it being done that doesn’t veer quickly into the cliches of porn. In the mean time, if you want intelligent stories with a healthy amount of realistic sex (even if it is between anthropomorphic animals) I recommend trying Omaha the Cat Dancer.
